The Interview

Who is  Curtis "Promisques" Noah?

As a fan of all types of music, I listen to a range of genres, but I do have to say that Aussie hip hop is a favourite for me... after hearing a few songs a couple of years ago, I became an instant fan of "Promisques" and recently I got my hands on his personal collection of work. I also had the privilege of interviewing him. As a result of this interview I learnt alot about the industry and its artists. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Me: Curtis, I've so many things I'd like to know about you, but firstly... If I asked you to describe what music is for you... What would you say?

Curtis: Ummm......  Music is my drug… And I’m Heavily addicted… It’s my escape from all the bullshit life throws at me…

Me: That's cool hey, I like it... ok so I've watched your clips and I've got to ask as a fan... how did you get into the 1outs battle scene?

Curtis: My mate was hounding me for years to get back into battles, I use to do the ol' school ones, and after about 2-3yrs of harassing me, I was like aight c*#t I'll do it! To shut you up... I tried to get into a couple of leagues back in the day. But no c*#t would give me a go, now EVERYone is offering to pay me to do a battle in there league, with all the perks that go with it.

Me: True... So I bet your glad you finally said yes then?

Curtis: Nah not really, (laughs) I know I'm better than half those c*#ts (laughs) I want a battle triathlon 1 round of beat making, 1 round of scratching, and another round of rapping.

Me: Awesome... Is that kind of thing already set up?

Curtis: Nah it's not... But f#*k it would prove skills.

Me: That would definitely cause a major change to the whole underground scene and it would be deadly to watch!... I know you where right into hip hop when we were younger, but how old where you roughly when you decided that it's what you wanted to do?

Curtis: F#*k I dunno... Back then I thought this is what I was gonna do... But I didn't understand the game...Probably round 18 when I landed my first ft. spot on a CD and started doing shows, is when I really started to believe this was possible...

Me: Cool..what CD ?

Curtis: Ummm... it was a community local talent CD, made by Gosford Community Centre, to raise money for youth week... I was the only rapper on there, so they were chuffed and they thought I would reach the kids a lot better. From there came the radio interviews, daily telegraph articles... all that s#*t... It was cool... I thought I'd made it at the time... Little did I know... I had just got my foot in the door

Me: How long ago was that?

Curtis: About 8 years... Nah sorry about 7 years.

Me: So what's been the best experience you've had so far... out of everything you've done?

Curtis: Probably getting to meet Method Man, Redman and Rahzel... getting to have a smoke and a drink with em... Meeting Cypress Hill was cool as well, working with c*#ts overseas is pretty dope too...

Me: Who would you like to work with in the future?

Curtis: If I could collab with anyone... I'd probably have to say Bernard Fanning... From powder finger... The bloke is a musical genius...

Me: Cool...Which album out of the ones you've released is your favourite? And why?

Curtis: The Southwest District would have to be my favourite cause I done most of it... Produce the beats, record, mix, master, graphic designs etc...Plus there are some dope tracks on there...

Me: That album is pretty awesome, I've heard a few of your ft's, can you tell me some of the other  names of the people you've collaborated with?

Curtis: Fark were to start... I can't remember all there names... But some of my favourites would have to be... Hyjak (From Aus)... Menace (Inglewood u.s.a)... Tito (Cali u.s.a)... Twotokes (U.K)... a.k.a nobody (Brooklyn u.s.a)... and some DJ in Brazil (I forget his name)

Me: All your songs have a unique style! Where do you get your inspiration from ?

Curtis: My kids... Channel V, Radio etc... When I hear all this s#*t they play... I think to myself, if they're making money off this s#*t... I could be a f#*king millionaire...

Me: How many children do you have?

Curtis: 2 girls... Aaliyah & Jayda.

Me: What do you hope to achieve from all this?

Curtis: I would like to achieve a high rep as a all round muso...

Me: What are your plans for the near future?

Curtis: My plans for the near future...Get the next album out, do a doco and get my clothing brand up and running...

Me: So you have a lot of aspirations then!...Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Curtis:  5 years... S#*t I would like to say still doing this... If not, working in a studio...

Me: It sounds like you have massive levels of determination... I hope everything goes well for you in all your future endeavours... I think people will be hearing a lot more from and about you...
Thanks for catching up with  me! I definitely have more respect for the Aussie Hip Hop scene after talking to you! That being said and since I have all your previous albums... I will definitely be watching out for your next one.
